Portsmouth Neighborhood in Portland, Oregon
Portsmouth neighborhood is a modest neighborhood that is involved in the community and is growing, because people are realizing that north Portland isn’t all that bad. Portsmouth is a residential neighborhood in North Portland, surrounded by the University Park, St. Johns and Kenton neighborhoods. So while there isn’t a lot going on in Portsmouth as far as commercial activity, the nearby neighborhoods offer shopping, restaurants, coffee shops and more that are all close at hand to locals of Portsmouth.
Homes in Portsmouth
There are a mixture of older and newer homes in the neighborhood, as there has been a recent influx of people moving into Portsmouth. So within the neighborhood it can be interesting because there will be a beautiful old Victorian home with a white picket fence, next to a freshly built home that is straight out of a cookie cutter suburban neighborhood. There are also parts of the neighborhood that are still developing, so there is definitely a wide variety of styles in architecture in this north Portland neighborhood.
Portsmouth Neighborhood Vibe
Walking through the neighborhood I saw an eclectic mix of people doing an assortment of things. There was a mother on the porch of her home rocking her baby, an elderly couple sitting on a bench in their front yard, a man washing his car, children playing in their backyards and more. There is not one activity that people are doing all of the time like working out or hanging out at coffee shops. There are all sorts of people in this neighborhood from all walks of life that occupy the charming homes of the area. The neighborhood is as a whole a very quiet and peaceful place. The mix of the old and the new offers something different that locals enjoy.
Convenience to other areas of Portland
There are plenty of bus stops that stop in Portsmouth, taking locals to other areas of Portland either for their commute to work or for a great coffee shop in St. Johns. North Portland is very bike friendly, and it is easy for locals to ride their bikes to nearby neighborhoods for a more exciting atmosphere. Locals
Parks
Northgate Park includes a baseball field, paved paths that align the outside of the park, picnic tables, playground, soccer field, softball field and a tennis court. Northgate Park is a nice place to come and relax, watch a softball game on the bleachers, or to take a walk on a nice day.
Portsmouth Community Garden is a garden where individuals and families of the community take care of their own plots and grow fresh produce that is distributed to local pantries.
McCoy Park is a beautiful park in the Portsmouth neighborhood that provides locals with a basketball court, paved paths, picnic tables, a playground and a water fountain to play in.
University Park, Portsmouth Park, McKenna Park and Columbia Park are also some great parks located within the area. Portland’s parks are some of the city’s greatest features, and north Portland validates that.
Schools
Students in the Portsmouth Neighborhood go to Clarendon/Portsmouth Elementary/Middle School and Roosevelt High School. University of Portland is also located nearby in the University Park neighborhood with a beautiful campus along N Willamette Boulevard.
